I’m dealing fine with the heat, it’s the seeming meltdown in civic functioning that’s getting to me today. Without warning or announcement this morning, the E line decided it didn’t want to run past Brigham Circle. Grrr. Someone explained to me that when the weather goes above 95, the steel in the tracks expands, making them unnavigable. (See Starts and Stops, for instance.) Perhaps, but this morning’s rush hour was more like 80 degrees, not 95, and in any case the MBTA Transit update site has nothing.
Then, I thought I’d pop into the RMV to get my driver’s license renewed. The new “customer service orientation” is a farce. My estimated wait was 25 minutes, and after an hour, I faced facts and realized I wasn’t going to get my license today. No announcements, nothing. What’s worse, when I tried to mention my overly long wait to the greeter, she acted like I was the crazy and impetuous one for approaching her and told me I’d have to check with “someone upstairs.” As if I wouldn’t have gotten my head yelled off if I’d walked straight up to the counter and asked them.
At least it provided an entertaining observation. One man, whom I could only classify as townie, was filling out the voter registration part, then pulled out his cell phone:
- Hey. What is Kennedy? Democrat or Republican?… No, that’s all I need to know.
You can never assume a base level of political knowledge. I’m still not sure if he wanted to register for the same or opposite party.
