Awful, awful news.
I think it’s hard to overestimate the psychic and political impact of this. More and more you’re going to have a hard time finding Bay State citizens who don’t feel that this entire project is a collosal waste of money and a big headache to boot. It’s one thing when an old tunnel falls apart, but this one is just a couple of years old. When we’re using a 45-year old tunnel as the reliable backup, that’s a sad commentary.
What’s more, the incident reveals that the official pronouncements from Turnpike officials and safety experts frankly aren’t reliable. Maybe they shouldn’t be spending their energy to convince us the tunnels are safe.
