The Innovation Candidate

Posted on Friday 7 July 2006

Chris Gabrielli seems to be shaping up into a savvy enough candidate, and I can foresee that he has a good shot at winning the primary - I’d place his odds well ahead of Reilly. His emphasis on “innovation” probably plays well. Still, am I the only one who finds the innovation fetish a little bit of a vestige from dot-com utopianism? Not that I don’t like innovative ideas, but sometimes the old-fashioned ones work very well, thank you, and in any case, I’d prefer someone actually talk about their ideas rather than spend all their time touting themselves as innovative.

Whether innovation or application of an idea that’s been floating around a while, one Gabrielli proposal I could get behind is the call for a full-calendar school year. At the very least, it would take the pressure out of the weird CCC-like summer employment schemes for teenagers that seem to be coming fast and heavy these days.
