A couple of things:
1) Went recently to the Kendall to see Jean-Pierre Melville’s Army of Shadows, a late 60s film about the French Resistance. Superb. Somehow, Melville brings to bear all the poetic realism and existential beauty of the French gangster genre to the historical film. Simone Signoret gives a great performance as well. Go see it while it’s still playing in the cinema.
2) I’ve been meaning for sometime to give recognition to Channel Zero, a local political blogger who moonlights as cinephile. Based in Arlington, he’s plugging away to spread film culture further north of the river. And I couldn’t agree with him more about the choice of Dr. Phil as Esplanade MC.
3) Finding myself increasingly back in research and writing mode, I have diverted some of my blogging energies to that end. From now on, my academic and film-studies stuff will reside at Category D. I don’t know how often or regularly I will update it, but I’ve been talking about the lack of academic blogging in the humanities for some time. It’s time I did something myself.
