LG Race Starts

On the Democratic side for Lieutenant General primary, a four-way race among relative unknowns (Tim Murray, Worcester mayor, probably has the most prominent profile) has meant that only insiders were following, and it was unclear to the wider public (OK, it was unclear to me) what the differences were the candidates were, what stake in the political terrain each represented.

Today, though, Blue Mass Group has a note about candidate Deb Goldberg’s support for New Bedford’s defiance of the MCAS graduation requirement. Commenters note that Sam Kelley also sides with New Beford. Given that I pretty broadly support MCAS and what it represents in the state’s education policy, and given that there are a series of procedural concerns with a city up and deciding it doesn’t like the law and thus isn’t going to follow it, I’m highly disinclined to support Goldberg and Kelly. But in any case, whether or not this should serve as a litmus test, it looks like education policy will be a defining issue that potentially separates a crowded field ideologically.

Of course, you can follow the candidates stance on MCAS and other issues at the pre-Convention Democratic Lt. Governor’s Forum, cosponsored by the BlogLeft folks and the Lowell Democratic City Committee, and taking place Sunday, May 21 at 2PM in the Lowell Senior Center. Consider attending - or else follow what’s sure to be engaging blogging of the event.
