Doubts about its political sellability aside, I’ll actually get behind MassMarrier’s crazy socialistic scheme. Some time ago I made a similar suggestion before the recession seemed to push the inexorable swing of the pendulum of agency debt and political will the other way. It’s worth pointing out that only about a quarter of the T’s revenues come from fares. From a conservative perspective, that’s proof that the MBTA is overly subsidized as is. From a liberal perspective, however, it suggests that it wouldn’t take all that much to achieve a magnificent and free transit system, one that would transform daily life in Metro Boston in countless, yet-to-be-imagined ways. Big kink to iron out: increased demand would put strains on already-strained rush hour commuting.
