Naming Laws

Posted on Friday 31 March 2006

There’s lots I want to write about today but have little time to do so. So let me throw out a question with less than earth-shattering importance. Today Nicole’s law goes into effect in Massachusetts, requiring carbon monoxide detectors in every residence. Fine enough, though I guess there’s a libertarian case to be made against state paternalism in these matters. But why does seemingly every law from the Legislature these days have a girl’s name? And not only that, but a certain type (generation and class) of girl’s name? It’s never Mark’s Law or even Patricia’s or Linda’s Law. The names could come from here (try 1994 popular names in their database). I think the legislature should drop the flair for melodrama and go back to naming things stuff like the Carbon Monoxide Detector Residential Requirement Act.
