Gay Boston Bloggers

Posted on Monday 27 February 2006

It’s been a while since I’ve featured some new (to me) blogs. So I thought I’d make up for the quiet spell by pointing out some of the other gay bloggers around town. Does it matter if a writer is gay? Not to be essentialist about these things, but I do tend to think it matters and that one’s sexual orientation (more properly, one’s relation to gay subcultures and gender norms) does impact one’s perspective. But don’t let me settle that question. Take a look for yourself and decide.

Third Decade. Longtime LCL reader and correspondent has one of those weblogs you should have bookmarked. Bridges personal diary, political blog, pop culture repository and general interest seamlessly. See, for instance, his post "Mainstreaming of American Racism," on the Dubai port deal.

Pelican in Her Piety. Fellow bookclubber who seems to find immeasurable time for keeping up with reading, technoculture, the arts, law reviews and lefty politics of various stripes. We seem to disagree on things frequently, but both agree the Walk of Fame is a miserable idea.

Boston Real Estate Blog. Another book club habitue, tracking news on the area’s real estate market, housing and urban development. I can’t do justice to the range of material that falls under that rubric, but I’d recommend his what-you-can-buy-in-the-city feature as a fun start.

T-Rage!. Our personal queer Mencken of the transit rails. His Teddy-T series had me rolling in laughter. As did his rants about Harvard Square. Plus, the man’s a fellow Lippmann buff so he can’t be all bad.

Life is Sweet in the Fenway. Diaristic blog of a twentysomething Biomed researcher, who’s actually been writing for a couple of year (I just discovered him). I love the recent Curling Open House visit.

Queer Today. My friend Joe laments the fact that there are no gay liberation kids storming the ramparts of straight society. He should read QT’s call for the end of governmental marriage.

DesignerBlog. This theatre designer and arts administrator offers "a blog for the arts and gay issues." The site focuses on precisely the arts for which I tend to be downright philistinistic (theatre, dance, fine music), but that’s not a bad thing of course.

I hope I haven’t misrepresented or, god forbid, outed anyone here. To my memory, all the writers above have identified as gay or queer men. If you want to be removed from the list, just let me know.

Likewise, are there any I should add? My list is shockingly bereft of party boys.

UPDATE: This generated a lot of response. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - keep them coming, and I’ll update this post with any new ones.
