People often complain about the behind-the-scenes politics of the Oscars - people voting for directors overlooked before, or ignoring actresses who won too recently- but I’ll take that in a heartbeat over the The Recording Academy, which thinks it’s OK to give a Grammy not only to the same artist year after year, but to the same release year after year.
Last year, Green Day won Best Rock Album for American Idiot; this year, it’s Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," which was on American Idiot. Similarly, "Vertigo" was last year’s Best Rock Performance, but the single’s album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb this year’s Album of the Year. Both albums were released in 2004. I know there are different release windows for singles than the albums off which they come, but given the decreasing importance of the single as a separate product, it seems like just an excuse for a stale choice.
