Since I’ve complained about the demise of gay bars in the city
before, it’s worth pointing out that a couple of new spots are spring
up. Dorchester has a new gay spot called dbar, which I gather
opened just in the last couple of weeks. Housed in a wood-paneled
space formerly an Irish pub, it’s a cross between gay bar, a modestly
fancy restaurant, and neighborhood pub. Having gone recently, I can
say the result is a good one, reminding me of a Brooklyn gay pub
(Brooklyn prices with it, I should warn). One of these days I’ll
have to go later in the evening, when DJs are playing and the tables
are cleared for a dance floor.
On the other side of town, my friend Joe is organizing a gay night
at Midway Cafe, on Washington St. in Jamaica Plain (near
Doyle’s and not too far from Green St. T). “Gay at Midway” will take
place every Tuesday evening, beginning tomorrow, from 9-ish til
close, which I believe is 1AM in JP. From what I hear, there’ll be a
DJ spinning non-diva house music. And there’s no cover.
Too early to tell if JP, Dorchester, or some other neighborhood
eventually wins the race of the new gay neighborhood, if one does
emerge again in Boston (my money is on Dorchester), but it’s good to
see new nightlife popping up in a scene static beyond belief.
