Take Down the Tollbooths

Posted on Thursday 12 January 2006

Christy Mihos, newly announced candidate for governor on the GOP/Independent side, was on Greater Boston last night. I’m not wowed by his candidacy - he strikes me as lacking in charisma, and to boot is tarred a bit by his association with the Big Dig. But he did mention that one of his prime platform positions would be to remove the tolls on the Mass Turnpike. Its construction has been paid for time and a half over, and is now just an unfairly applied tax on some commuters but not others. My first gut reaction was to say no, but upon reflection I found I agreed. We should turn the pike from a toll road to a free highway.

I’m wondering why a Democratic candidate for governor hasn’t had the bright idea to take the same stance. It would generate no small amount of good will and credentials as fiscally restrained.
