My friend Paul, an independent filmmaker formerly in Knoxville, now based in Philadelphia, has started a blog that, even if I didn’t know him, I’d hearily recommend to those interested in independent film. Self-Reliant Filmmaking is a compendium of news, advice, reflections on distribution and commentary on filmmaking aesthetics. The best place to start may be his Declaration of Principles, wherein he lays out the reasons for "making high-quality films at a low-cost and/or with small-labor systems.” As a concept, self-reliance strikes me as an interesting way (not foolproof, but a start) to conceptualize the difficulty Chuck described in defining independent cinema industrially.
