I’m trying to make good on my New Year’s resolutions and feature some new sites of interest. What better way to start than with the wonderful nerdy-arty mix of the blog from the MIT Press folks? As to be expected, there’s one part art and design, one part technology and techno-cultural theoretical work; and one part politics. Of course, I gravitated immediately to the film post, on the unsung work of film subtitlers. Indeed, even (especially?) film scholars take subtitling for granted, noticing it only when there’s a breach in rendering figurative expressions in a language they happen to know. (Happens some in French and German, less so in Vietnamese or Wolof). As more scholarly work is done on the way films these days are often experienced on the small screen(s), perhaps someone will look at the specificity of titling, too.
