Book Club 2006

Posted on Wednesday 4 January 2006

A new year, new books.

At our last bookclub meeting we decided it would be helpful to come up with a few months’ worth of reading in advance. So, starting this month, these will be the books through May:

Jan
Edward Jay Epstein, The Big Picture
optional: Robert Sklar, Movie Made America

Feb
Susan Sontag, On Photography

Mar
Peter Bearman, Doormen

Apr
Richard Hofstadter, The American Political Tradition

May
Mark Mazower, Dark Continent

The Hofstadter and the Sontag are older, the rest fairly recent.

Meetings are on the last Wednesday of each month, unless circumstances come up (Memorial Day holiday in May, for instance). The first meeting will be January 25, 6PM at the Toscanini’s on Main
St. between Central Sq. and MIT in Cambridge. We can try out the place and see how it works out. For this month (movie month), I included the Sklar book, because I thought the Epstein would be pretty light, and Chuck Tryon’s praise had reminded me I’d never actually read it.
