Went to see the New Pornographers play last night at the Roxy. What a fabulous show. Live, their sounds is even fuller than on record, and it’s impressive to hear an indie band be able to do four-part harmonies and actually be in key. I was hoping they’d take the "Twin Cinemas" album title as an occasion for some Chelsea Girls-esque split screen projection onto the state but sadly, it was not to be.
I’ll put in a plug for their new album, which has quickly grown on me. Maybe not as unified as previous efforts, and without the high points like "Mass Romantic" or "Miss Teen Wordpower" (though "Bones of an Idol" comes close), the songwriting is more consistently top-rate. And since his solo album, bandleader Carl/A.C. Newman has discovered production values - dynamic range, change of tempos, keyboards used for mood instead of overembellishment. This album, alone of the the New Pornographers releases, doesn’t sounds like a mad race start to finish.
And should I add that I now have a girl crush on Neko Case? She has remarkable stage presence and seemed kinda glamorous in her Barbara Mandrell-meets-indie-kid get up.
