Slate has a review of the new Gang of Four album, which rerecords all of their great angular postpunk classics.
It’s hard to think of a precedent in rock history for Return—essentially, a band recording its own tribute album. The decision has bemused many Gang of Four fans, who wonder why the band didn’t just put out a compilation of the definitive versions.
It’s not without precedent in the least: the Mekons did the same thing a couple years ago. At least the Slate freelancer, Simon Reynolds, has a book website with a pretty thorough postpunk discography and list of esoterica.
Gang of Four is not the only band trying to cash in on the Gang of Four revival. Pylon has reformed and promises a rerelease of their excellent, long out-of-print Gyrate. I’m hoping for a tour with a Northeast leg.
