Open Studios were this weekend in Jamaica Plain. I have to admit it’s the first year I’ve done them there, and it’s a fun thing to wander around the neighborhood looking at art and people’s studios, particuarly given the good weather. As I predicted, a good 90 percent of the work was either sub-par or just not my thing, but I saw some excellent and interesting work as well: David Sturtevant’s Hopper-esque cityscapes at the Eliot School, some good gouache painting at the Unitarian Church, and a series of vibrant silkscreen prints on display at Rhythm & Muse. I don’t have a program handy, and for some stupid reason the open studios website doesn’t have their map or listing, but I’ll update with info if I get it.
Of course, it’s high season for city politics, so my open studios circuit wouldn’t be complete without a run-in with a super-affable Mayor Menino at one frame/art shop (he immediately shook my hand when I got within six feet of him), and with Felix Arroyo at a brunch I attended. The health care amendment folks were also out in full force.
