Bay Windows puts out an impassioned column against the ex-gay movement and the notion of “conversion.” Let me point out an interesting tidbit from that James Dobson site I mentioned:
There is growing evidence that change of sexual orientation is possible. Pro-homosexual organizations and members of the media have tried to convince our society that homosexuality is inevitable, immutable, irresistible, and therefore untreatable. “That is simply not true,” says Dr. Dobson. “There are 800 known former gay and lesbian individuals today who have escaped from the homosexual lifestyle and found wholeness in their newfound heterosexuality.”
Now, I believe that the ex-gay movement is a bunch of crock, perpetuated by folks who have every desire to mistake self-repression for meaningful rebuilding of their psyche. But I expected that in bolstering their case, Focus on the Family would want to make conversion seem like a real possibility. I mean, I guess it’s great that they admit that “homosexuality is not easily overcome,” but all they could find are 800 people? Out of how many gay men and women? Say (conservatively) there are 2 million gay adults in the U.S. The resulting %.04 conversion rate is negligible. It’s even worse if those 800 include ex-gays from other countries.
