Talk of the Town

Posted on Sunday 7 August 2005

Here’s the local chatter this weekend:

Francine discusses the downside of “Lance Effect” for cycling, a racing individualism that cuts against the communitarian spirit of cycling.

Derek wonders about first date rules, and if they apply equally to women and men, straight and gay. My feeling is that for gay men, they still apply, but more as a guideline for mutually signalling expectations than as a hardfast rule. I.e. sex on first date will signal that it’s a trick, but even then sometimes leads to something longer term. I’m just eager to hear more first date rules: are movies forbidden? what kind of restaurants aren’t allowed? are sneakers acceptable? I once heard that a guy won’t date anyone who orders the chicken dish off the menu, because it signals that he’s a bland, unadventuresome person. (The dating pool must be much larger in New York than here, I thought.)

“Pelican” gripes about copyright zones in the world of iTunes. We may live in a globalizing world, but media distribution rights really break down by nation-state.

The Chimes at Midnight go for Joan Venocchi’s jugular. I actually will (mostly) defend Venocchi, but they’re right that she has “a lot of cranky dislikes but no real ideology.” To me that’s why she’s useful. A lot of people have only cranky dislikes and no real ideology, so it helps to have a window into their mindset.
