Second Prohibition Era

Posted on Wednesday 13 July 2005

It’s not often that I lean libertarian, but on the Food Police I think they’re right: this group is frightening! If they ever had full power and decided to follow their logic of government-as-actuarial-enforcemer I’d seriously consider life in exile. Under the guise of "public health", actuarial mentality and panic over children, we’re seeing the dawn of a new Prohibition movement of the Left.

How else to explain the travails a friend of mine is facing in writing adult ed textbooks? Simple words like "wine" are forbidden and pipes can’t be used to illustrate the word "smoke" because California state law prohibits any textbooks which "encourage" alcohol or tobacco use. I’m not trying to make boozers out of our nation’s children, but this is sheer sublimated moralism passing as science.
