Maybe others have pointed this out already, but Stephanie Coontz’s op-ed in yesterday’s New York Times is a must-read. The real revolution in family structure, she argues, has not been the arrival of gay marriage, but of voluntary (straight) marriage based in romantic love, not kinship negotiation. “Gays and lesbians,” she writes, “simply looked at the revolution heterosexuals had wrought and noticed that with its new norms, marriage could work for them, too.” I’ve been meaning to read her book on the subject, and now will definitely have to move it up the list.
