It’s official: the first book of the reading group will be Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner’s Freakonomics. For those who’ve not heard much about it, it’s an attempt (written for a general audience) to use economic method to talk about various trends in society. I’ve mentioned the authors’ piece in Slate on black names before; other chapters, presumably, follow in a similar vein. The book’s only available hardbound, but is currently discounted at Harvard Bookstore, Borders, Amazon and probably most any bookseller. Thumbing through it, it seems fairly short and readable to me. For those wishing to read a little more, Crooked Timber also ran an interesting forum on Levitt’s work recently.
We’ll meet Thursday, June 23 June 30, after work, pre-dinner, at 6PM, at Espresso Royale Cafe on the edge of Northeastern (on Gainsborough, off Huntington, near the YMCA). Based on the input of those who show up, we can decide on time, place, and reading selections for future meetings. In the meantime, pick up a copy of Freakonomics and join us on the 23rd 30th, ideally with questions or topics you find worth discussing.
