The State Democratic convention is a good time to reflect on a noticeable change in the field of Massachusetts bloggers: a number of new blogs have emerged with an explicitly liberal-left bent lately, often with particular local takes marginalized by the Boston-centric news outlets (and, to be honest, this blog).
In Western Mass., we have Frederick Clarkson and Noho-Missives, MassLive’s The Fray, and Michael Forbes Wilcox- all provide thorough and insightful posts keeping track state politics. Central Mass.-based David Eisenthal dives into policy, national and local. In the eastern part of the state, we have promising new entries, Cape Cod Works, Cape Ann Dem and Left in Lowell. And wonkNOT! takes up Lakoffian framing.
This is in addition to the general Dem politics blogs Blue Mass Group and .08 Acres, both of whom report from this weekend’s party convention. (Check out Cape Ann Dem on the party platform and Frederick Clarkson for a run-down as well).
Of course, this doesn’t begin to list all of the local liberal bloggers, but a pattern is emerging of people taking the daily Kos model and explicitly applying it to state and local races. In the process, they’re filling in a market gap in the provision of quality political analysis for Massachusetts and local politics. And the new blogs are starting faster than I can update my blogroll.
Now, regular readers will know that this is not strictly a political blog and that in any case my politics aren’t straight-up “progressive”, partisan or activist. I’m more a Matt Yglesias wannabe than a Kos spinoff. But these new bloggers are doing great work, and I’m flattered to be included in their community.
