The Third Decade’s Derek takes me to task for writing about arcane tax policy while ignoring a recently released study by the Harvard Civil Rights Project on racial discrimination in Boston. Let me just say that a) I think there is a place for arcane policy matters in blogging and it’s something I enjoy writing about from time to time; and b) I miss a lot of the interesting, important and non-arcane stories.
But it is an interesting study, if for no other reason than the reaction it’s produced in the Letters to the Editor section (The Metro readers are exercised about certain buses that went to Six Flags). The study itself finds that, despite some of the boosterish talk you heard about a “new Boston” during the DNC, discrimination is alive in the city. I’m currently working my way through the study and will undoubtedly have something to say about it, but in the meanwhile, go read (if you haven’t already) Derek’s gloss on it, which makes the excellent point that class complicates our view of racial discrimination.
