The Pope’s homophobia

Posted on Friday 8 April 2005

Maybe I was premature in pronouncing the death of the gay press. Susan Ryan-Vollmar has done a good job giving Bay Windows a sense of editorial focus. For those tired of the mainstream media’s lovefest with the Pope, go read her piece on John Paul’s homophobia. She’s absolutely right that the mainstream media - even the liberal opinion outlets like Slate and the New Republic - would not touch the issue. She notes, “Christopher Hitchens authored a tough piece for Slate subtitled “What No One Else Will Say About John Paul II” castigating him for providing Cardinal Bernard Law with a “sinecure at the Vatican.” But the piece ignores the Vatican strategy for refusing to accept responsibility for the clergy sex abuse epidemic: blame it on the gays.” We should remember that in all the “rockstar” treatment Diane Sawyer is giving.

The paper also has a chronology of the Pope’s statements on homosexuality and a collection of reactions to the Pope’s death from gay Catholics, local and national.
