No time for a substantive post this morning, so I just thought I’d round up some MP3 links I’ve seen lately:
The Charlatans have a new album out, though without a US distributor I doubt many here are aware. It’s been billed as a return to form, and listening to it streamed I can say it’s uneven but the good songs are quite good. Best is the non-album atmospheric, Northern Soul-ish instrumental Alles Klar downloadable from their website.
Speaking of Northern Soul, The Cool Out has an excellent forgotten track by the Parliaments .
Scenestars has preview tracks of New Order’s upcoming album. Disappointing, I think (they’re back to their early 90s ho-hum-ness), but you can listen and decide for yourself.
For a very limited time, Mystical Beast has up extremely rare Scott Miller tracks from his pre-Game Theory band Alternate Learning. For post-Game Theory work, the Loud Family website has sample MP3s.
And, finally, from Lost Bands of the New Wave Era, I discovered that star of The Office, Ricky Gervais, not only was once Suede’s manager, but that he was in an 80s pop duo called Seona Dancing. The songs are here. I can’t listen without thinking of one of David Brent’s videos.
Enjoy!
UPDATE: I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Atlanta band Magnapop has gotten back together. I have a soft spot in my heart for them, not only for their oft-great 90s alternarock, but also because singer Linda Hopper’s first band, Oh OK was and is one of my favorite Athens, GA acts. The Magnapop site has a sample from the new album, as well as a couple of older tracks.
My other Athens fave, Pylon, is the subject of a post today at Just for a Day, complete with their first single “Cool”.
