Despite the America-first flyover-zone music populism I’ve often advocated in this blog, I’m also slavishly anglophile in my tastes. I’ve championed Britpop one-hit wonders others ignore or brush off as derivative. I’ve held the postpunk imports dear to my heart. And I’ve lately been filling in the shoegaze and C-86 holes in my record collection as much as my meager eBay budget will allow.
But no number of words can make me understand the disproportionate appeal the Happy Mondays have on the British music psyche. Can anyone please explain? Sure, they represent the intersection of late 80s dance music and indie rock. But (unlike the Charlatans, say, or the Stone Roses in their singles) I never felt them all that danceable or all that great as rock either. Do I need to be giving them another listen?
All of this arises, of course, because Mondays dancer and persona Bez has become a reality TV star in the UK. Wasn’t there an episode of The Office about this?
