Natural Cure cant

Posted on Sunday 2 January 2005

I’m currently watching a surreal informercial on Channel 7 peddling a “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You to Know About” book by Kevin Trudeau (not in stores now, sadly). It’s pretty much the worst type of conspiracy mongering that marks some strains of left-critique of both the food and the drug industries. In fact, Fast Food Nation just got invoked. The oddness is that the informercial uses the Charlie Rose/Bill Moyers interview set-up with the interviewer playing the naif agreeing wholeheartedly.

I can’t help but recall an argument I got in one time with a roommate’s friend, who insisted that nefarious industry tricks were hindering research on natural alternatives to traditional medicine and drug development. “Our country’s too caught up in capitalism,” he argued. But what other advanced country, besides Germany maybe, has such a weird fondness for quakery?
