Collateral

Posted on Thursday 30 December 2004

The advantage, if you can call it that, of watching a film on DVD is that the little clock lets you know how well the narrative is following the Robert Towne/Syd Field model for effective screenplays. In Collateral, the first plot point comes right at 20 min. on the clock. (The second is a little early at 1:30 or so).

Still, I appreciated the antiquated patness of the screenplay. Or, rather, the visuals made me appeciate the patness of the screenplay. Someone, Michael Mann, decided it was time to give LA the Wong Kar-Wai treatment, and the results are just fantastic. He’s one of a few directors in Hollywood allowing his cinematographer to explore color as a pursuit in its own right. Definitely, it’s the sleeper film of the year. I just am wondering why I missed it in the cinema.
