Forced Transit Rule

Posted on Thursday 2 December 2004

Kevin Drum points out a Washington Post story revealing that DC Metro board members have barely ridden the Metro themselves. He opines, “What kind of nitwit agrees to sit on a board but then figures that it doesn’t matter if they have any personal experience with their own product? An idiot, that’s who.”

Now, I’ve made a similar complaint before about the MBTA - and I’m not even concerned about the board of directors, but rather the management. I have no hard evidence (Globe Spotlight series where are you?), but I’m 98% sure that Joe Pesaturo and company do not take the T to work. Just as Boston requires city employees to live in the city, I think there should be a law requiring MBTA management to commute to work by public transit. The number of problems that would magically fix themselves would be surprising.

To my eye, Michael Dukakis is the only one who practices what he preaches, as I see him regularly on my E line commute with his Amtrak-embossed satchel.
