Electioneering

Posted on Tuesday 2 November 2004

Chuck Tryon is collecting voting stories. Sadly, not much to tell here, everything went smoothly, and no one installs menacing watchers in states so out of play as Massachusetts. The biggest shock was actually seeing a line out the door of my polling station, which normally has tumbleweeds blowing through.

All told, I tend to agree with David Brooks that the left has been a little too obsessed with dirty tricks. Not that smear campaigns and homophobic push polling is an honorable thing, mind you. But it’s a shame when a smart blog like Josh Marshall’s becomes a minute by minute update on fliers handed out in Cincinnati parking lots. At the same time, the dirty trick mentality on the GOP side has to have been the stupidest part of the campaign. Not only has it exacerbated any PR problem among black voters, but it’s given little upside while mobilizing Kerry voters like nothing else.

Watching returns now. I’ve already moved from cautiously optimistic to downright optimistic.
