
For those who haven’t been downtown, or more precisely to the edge of downtown, to witness the progress of the Big Dig, it’s hard to put into words the revelation that tearing down the Central Artery has been. Yes, we knew this was the primary rationale for the project to begin with. And even now, the debris and construction site still get in the way of an unspoiled view. But nonetheless the sightlines are incredible. It’s now possible to see downtown from the North End unobstructed:

One might object to the management of the project or quibble that transportation dollars could have been spent better elsewhere. Still, it’s now possible to see, not just on projected sketches but to really see, that there is a revelatory upside in all this for the city.
