Lieberman as McCain

Posted on Monday 8 December 2003

I really do not understand the new TV ad from Joe Lieberman getting an endorsement not from John McCain but from New Hampshire voters who voted for McCain last time around. Yes, McCain won the primary in an amazing comeback victory, but it was in the Republican primary. Lieberman, if he’s to be successful, has to work against the perception that he’s Bush Lite, and in this election cycle at least, presenting yourself as the candidate that Republican primary voters would prefer is an iffy proposition. It might be the best tack for Dean who needs to prove an ability to win over centrist voters, but it just paints Lieberman as a Republican wanna-be. And this, despite any substantive differences Lieberman has with the Republican party.

But just as the Kerry campaign seems intent on careening spectacularly out of control, Lieberman’s seems intent on playing martyr to what it sees as Dean madness sweeping over the Democratic party.
