As if to answer my calls for suggestions for improving the tourism-friendliness of Boston, a new op-ed in Commonwealth magazine takes the upcoming Democratic convention as an occasion for proposing a few visitor amenities, including the following:
Establish an orderly system of taxi and private-car arrival at [Logan Airport] terminals to eliminate chaos at curbside baggage check-in and access points to terminal entrances;
Provide better information services and travel assistance at the MBTA airport station on the Blue Line, including T and city maps.
Provide excellent concierge services [at local hotels], including information about city transportation systems, cultural and historic venues, and major events;
Some good suggestions, but the article in general makes me wonder: is the DNC really an event on the magnitude of the Olympics? Sure, it’ll be a publicity and small-scale economic boost to the city, but can we really expect it to remake the whole urban fabric? I suspect not.
