Yesterday I wrote about the current anti-intellectual streak in the Republican party. Exhibit K in the case came to my attention via the Unofficial Paul Krugman page: The National Review’s Don Luskin has an inadvertantly-hilarious-meets-creepy post on his website. Let’s roll the tape:
And one other thing. The Nobel Prize in economics will be announced in a matter of days. Krugman’s second-rate work in economics hardly deserves any special recognition, but as Bruce Bartlett told me, “You have to remember the well of those truly deserving of the award is running dry. Everyone who really deserves it is either dead or has already won. This means that second-tier intellects like Krugman are indeed in the running. However, the main reason why he might win is because the Nobel Committee often sends political messages with its awards. Knowing how much Europeans hate George W. Bush, I wouldn’t put it past them to give the award to his most vicious critic as a way of sticking their finger in his eye.”
Who are these guys, anyway, and why isn’t any respectable journalist afraid to be associated with them? And why isn’t the National Center for Policy Analysis being laughed out of town? By the way, this year’s Nobel in Economics has gone to Robert Engel and Clive Granger, so I guess the Swedes aren’t as pink and Bush-hating as Luskin fears.
