The election results are in, and it doesn’t quite look like the shakeup in the Boston City Council makeup that the Herald predicted. In order, the eight qualifiers for the final council election in November are: Michael F. Flaherty, Stephen J. Murphy, Patricia White, Maura A. Hennigan, Felix Arroyo, Matt O’Malley, Althea Garrison and Roy Owens. This doesn’t bode well for Arroyo, certainly, but the remaining members of the “crazy caucus” - Yancey, Hennigan, and honorary member Murphy - look fairly well set for the general election.
Today, of course, there was general moaning about the low turnout, but given the sparse media coverage of the race and the politics of the council, I’m hardly surprised and don’t think the public is necessarily to blame. After all, the race does have its drama and interesting characters. My favorite bit so far has come from Althea Garrison, who, according to the West Roxbury Transcript, “wants to make Boston a better place for working families by focusing on jobs and the economy. Although she says she has a concrete plan to accomplish these goals, she said she wouldn’t reveal the scheme because she didn’t want to give away the secrets to other candidates.” Sadly, since the candidate’s still in the running, we’ll have to wait longer to find out what this plan is.
