The Globe’s priest abuse scandal coverage has not weighed in yet, but this weekend the Observer and the BBC report on a Vatican document urging church officials to shuffle accused priests around and keep the accusations secret. The Church has retorted that the document has long since been superceded by canon law providing for the defrocking of abusive priests. This may be true, but it doesn’t look good for the institution’s moral authority to have the Pope’s signature at the bottom of a document calling for reassigning potentially abusive priests to new parishes. I’m eager to see more on this document and what it represents.
