Kick Agricultural Subsidies

Posted on Monday 18 August 2003

The Guardian has launched a new weblog dedicated to ending first-world agricultural subisidies. For an explanation of the website and its reason, they have a leader polemic against subsidies today. (And worth checking out too are a series of NY Times op-eds on the subject). As they note, this is one of the few topics that unites right and left. Or at least potentially… we’ll see if any Democratic candidate has the courage to stand up in Iowa and mention that he/she opposes farm subsidies, much less agricultural tarriffs. And the anti-globalization are so convinced that market-based trade cannot ameliorate the third world’s condition that they’re not likely to show enthusiasm for a proposal that would work in precisely that way. Let’s hope all of this changes soon.
