The Phoenix has noted before a major inconsistency in Mayor Menino’s economic development vision for the city: he touts that the new Convention Center will boost convention travel and tourism manyfold, yet opposes runway expansion at Logan Airport as unnecessary. Clearly, on each end he is caving into interests - East Boston neighborhood forces and South Boston contractors. Now, today, we have a Globe article on Macworld which points out how the convention center may be sparsely attended when it opens.
Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in South Boston. Last year, they struck a deal that would not only bring Macworld back, but position it as the first meeting in the massive new convention center.
The success of Macworld Boston is important symbolically to the new convention center, which, less than a year from opening, has few solid bookings.
At least we have the Democratic convention, which will be a boon to the city, but one likely whose benefits have already been counted several times over. And maybe the airport won’t need that expansion yet after all.
