Apology watch for Santorum

Posted on Wednesday 30 April 2003

Grudgingly, I’d say Joan Vennochi’s comparison between the Rick Santorum and Dixie Chicks controversies is more apt than most liberals would want to admit. Granted, there are issues she doesn’t mention - like whether the Republicans should be satisfied with a blatant homophobe as No. 3 Man in Congress - but those trying to replay the Trent Lott scandal may be right on the merits of the case, but aren’t striking the right tone.

Meanwhile, in the American Prospect, Michael Tomasky uses the Santorum comments as an occasion to reflect on what the Dems aren’t doing - actively fighting the Republicans in any meaningful and visible way. I agree: performance-piece apologies are one of the worst legacies of Clintonian liberalism and should go. Now. The Dems shouldn’t be on apology watch for Santorum, they should be making the case for the treatment of gays as first class citizens.
