Nutritional Recommendations

Posted on Monday 21 April 2003

Another shameful instance of the politicization of science under the new Republican political climate: the sugar industry now is lobbying Congress to tie World Health Organization funding to “proper” findings in their nutritional recommendations. In their words, “Taxpayers’ dollars should not be used to support misguided, non-science-based reports which do not add to the health and well-being of Americans, much less the rest of the world.” What’s sinister - and this echoes Paul Krugman’s complaint in the Friday’s times - is the same seamless collapse of parochial anti-globalism and faux scientism that we’ve seen in resistance to actions against global warming.
