SUVs cause terrorism ads

Posted on Monday 13 January 2003

Everyone seems up in arms about the SUV-causes-terrorism ads. (See today’s Globe or Bob Zellnick’s rant during last Friday’s Greater Boston). Granted, the ads do draw with a large brushstroke, but the apologies for SUVs that have come in their wake are nauseating. I refuse to believe that roads are safer since SUV popularity has risen (this confuses any purported individual safety with collective safety). And yes, smaller cars use gas, too, and we are all dependent on oil consumption for many things besides SUVs. So maybe more nuanced thought and less invective is needed for our pollution problems. But to ignore the indefensible and collective insanity that’s been the hallmark of the SUV craze in this country is unconscionable for anyone who cares for the environment. Fortunately Gregg Easterbook has a great book review on the subject in this week’s New Republic. Like a lot of his writing on environmental policy, his take isn’t emotion-sodden rant, but neither does he lose sight of the bigger picture, like the offended SUV drivers seem to be doing.
